Cultivating Confidence: Kebron Shewangzaw’s Journey from Pages to Petals
At 17, Kebron Shewangzaw is already charting a bold path—one that blends creativity, curiosity, and community. As an incoming student at Wellesley College, Kebron brings a love for reading, writing, and drawing into every space she enters. But before stepping onto campus, she chose to step into something entirely new: the gardens of Nemas Gardens.
A Leap Beyond the Comfort Zone
Kebron joined the Nemas Gardens internship with a clear set of goals:
Learn the fundamentals of gardening
Explore environmental science in action
Build meaningful connections within her community
Her motivation was deeply personal. She wanted to challenge herself, grow flowers at home and in college, and embrace experiences that stretched her beyond the familiar.
“I wanted to step outside my comfort zone and connect with my community before heading off to college.”
Lessons That Took Root
Throughout her time at Nemas Gardens, Kebron didn’t just plant seeds—she planted confidence. Her key takeaways reflect a rich and rewarding experience:
Gardening skills: From soil prep to flower care, she learned how to nurture life from the ground up.
New friendships: Working alongside peers and mentors, she built bonds that bloomed as beautifully as the garden itself.
Financial literacy: She gained practical knowledge about budgeting and resource management—skills that will serve her well in college and beyond.
Kebron’s Advice to Future Interns
Her message is clear and empowering:
“Be ready for hard work—it’s rewarding and fun.”
Kebron’s story is a reminder that growth happens when we dig deep, show up fully, and open ourselves to new possibilities. Whether she’s sketching in her notebook or tending to a flower bed, she’s cultivating a life rooted in creativity, care, and connection.
From the garden to Wellesley, Kebron carries with her the lessons of nature, the strength of community, and the courage to keep growing. Her journey is just beginning—but the seeds she’s planted will flourish for years to come.
