As the temperatures rise and the days get longer, May marks a beautiful time for gardening, especially in Zone 7a. This region’s mild climate in May provides a perfect environment for a variety of fruits and vegetables, but three stand out as particularly rewarding to grow. These three would be strawberries, cherries, and asparagus.

Strawberries thrive in well-drained soil and full sun, making them perfect for raised beds or containers. With proper care, you can expect to start harvesting these berries by late May.  Zone 7a is suitable for both sweet and sour cherry varieties, which thrive in well-drained soil with ample sunlight. While it may take a couple of years for young trees to bear fruit, the wait is well worth it. By late May, you can start to see the first cherries forming.

Asparagus requires patience when first planted, but once established, it can produce for 15 years or more. In Zone 7a, the harvest typically begins in late April and continues into June, making May an ideal time to enjoy fresh asparagus. This vegetable loves well-drained, nutrient-rich soil and full sun. It’s delicious grilled, roasted, or sautéed, and packed with vitamins and minerals, making it a nutritious addition to any meal.

Growing strawberries, cherries, and asparagus in May in Zone 7a is not only rewarding but also a delightful way to embrace the season's abundance. With proper care and attention, these fruits and vegetables can enhance your garden and provide fresh, flavorful produce for your table.
