March Forward Into a New Growing Season

Welcome to February, dear gardeners, growers, and lovers of all things green.

March carries a special kind of energy. The days stretch a little longer, the air begins to soften, and the garden starts whispering that it is almost time. It is a month of transition, reflection, and preparation.

March is also Women’s History Month, a time to recognize the women who have shaped our communities, our food systems, and our futures. In agriculture especially, women have always played a central role. From seed saving and herbal knowledge passed down through generations to leading farms, food justice movements, and agricultural education programs, women continue to cultivate more than crops. They cultivate resilience, nourishment, and opportunity. As we step into a new growing season, it feels fitting to honor the women who have tilled the soil before us and those who are planting new seeds of change today.

With spring officially arriving this month, gardeners in Zone 7a can feel the momentum building. Our average last frost date is approaching, which means preparation is everything right now. This is the time to clean up garden beds, refresh soil with compost, and map out what you want to grow. If you have not started seeds indoors yet, there is still time for warm season crops like tomatoes and peppers. Cool season crops such as lettuce, kale, spinach, and peas can go directly into the ground as soon as the soil is workable.

Take a moment to test your soil, sharpen your tools, and check your seed inventory. Thoughtful preparation now will make planting day smoother and more rewarding. Gardening teaches patience, and March is the perfect reminder that growth begins long before anything breaks through the surface.

Of course, March also brings St. Patrick’s Day, a celebration often filled with vibrant greens. While many think of clovers and festivities, gardeners can take inspiration from the color itself. Green represents renewal, vitality, and life. It is the color of healthy leaves, thriving herbs, and new seedlings reaching toward the sun. Consider planting something green this month in honor of the season, whether it is a tray of fresh microgreens on your kitchen counter or a bed of leafy vegetables outdoors.

As we move through March, let us celebrate the strength and leadership of women, prepare our gardens with intention, and welcome the promise of spring.

Let’s welcome March, Growers.

The soil is warming, the frost is fading, and a new season of growth is right around the corner.
