How to Use Your Clamshell Starter Kit

How to Use Your Clamshell Garden Kit

This is the same kit we use in our afterschool garden clubs, and it is one of our favorites! With just a few simple steps, you will have your seeds planted and on their way to becoming something amazing. Here is everything you need to know.

What's in Your Kit

Your Clamshell Garden Kit includes four peat pellets, a packet of seeds, and a plant label.

Step-by-Step Planting Guide

Step 1: Set up your peat pellets. Place your peat pellets inside the clamshell tray. Make sure each pellet is positioned with the side that has a small circle facing up. That little circle is your guide for where the seeds will go!

Step 2: Water the peat pellets with warm water. Pour warm water over your peat pellets and watch them expand. Give them a little time to fully soak up the water before moving on to the next step.

Step 3: Create a small hole for your seeds. Once your pellets have expanded, you will notice the small circle on top has opened up a bit. Use your finger to gently press a small hole in the center of each pellet right where that circle is. Be careful not to make the hole too deep, just enough to nestle your seeds in.

Step 4: Add your seeds. Place your seeds into the holes you just made following the instructions included in your kit.

Step 5: Cover your seeds. Gently pinch the peat together over the hole to cover your seeds back up. No extra soil needed!

Step 6: Close the lid. Snap your clamshell lid closed. This creates a warm, humid environment that gives your seeds the best possible start.

Step 7: Add your plant label. Label your kit so you always know what is growing inside.

What Happens Next?

Keep your clamshell in a warm spot with good light and check on it regularly. The closed lid will help hold in moisture, but you can open it to add a little warm water if the pellets start to dry out. Once your seedlings are ready, you can transplant them into a larger pot or garden bed, peat pellet and all!
