Compliance and Policies 

In accordance with the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act, employees whose primary work location is in Maryland are entitled to earned sick and safe leave. Employers with 15 or more employees must provide paid leave, while those with fewer than 15 must offer unpaid leave. Employees accrue one hour of leave for every 30 hours worked, which can be used for personal or family illness, preventive medical care, parental leave, or matters related to domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking. Employers may cap usage at 64 hours per year, with up to 40 unused hours carried over annually.


Maryland’s Wage and Hour Law also requires that most employees receive overtime pay at one and a half times their regular hourly rate for any hours worked beyond 40 in a seven-day workweek. Only actual hours worked count toward overtime eligibility—vacation, sick, or holiday hours do not apply. Certain roles may be exempt based on job duties and salary level. Employers are required to maintain accurate records of hours worked and wages paid for at least three years, and violations may result in back pay and fines.
