Intern Today, Changemaker Tomorrow

Summer 2025 at Nemas Gardens was all about learning, teamwork, and real growth. Our interns showed up ready to work—and they delivered. They gained hands-on experience that went far beyond the basics. This wasn’t a passive internship. It was active, collaborative, and rooted in purpose. Our team is proud of what we accomplished together—and grateful to every intern who made it happen.

How it all started: The future walked in

We reached out to community school coordinators across high schools in PGCPS, and the response was nothing short of extraordinary—especially from Eleanor Roosevelt High School. Students eagerly applied to our summer internship posting, submitting resumes, CVs, and letters of interest. They arrived for interviews dressed professionally, prepared, and ready to contribute.

Our initial goal was to hire just four interns. However, after the fourth interview, our CEO and founder, Kevin Alsop, made a pivotal decision. We would not turn away any student who showed up. His belief is simple but powerful—when young people take initiative, it’s our duty to respond with accountability and support. We see it as an honor, a privilege, and a responsibility to invest in the lives of these future leaders.

Too often, younger generations are unfairly labeled as entitled or disengaged. We saw this as a chance to rewrite that narrative—and it turned out to be one of the best decisions we made in 2025.

Learning Through Hands-On Experience

They didn’t just sit and listen; they jumped into real experiences. Whether they were learning how to care for the soil, discovering how different plants support each other, or talking about where our food really comes from, every workshop was a chance to connect with the land and each other. It wasn’t about memorizing facts—it was about seeing, touching, and understanding the world in a whole new way.

Building Community Connections

At Nemas Gardens, we understand that gardening extends beyond growing food; it’s about building a connected community. The bonds formed during these activities were heartwarming. It was inspiring to see interns engaging with community members, creating a sense of belonging and shared responsibility. This synergy demonstrated that when we work together, we can truly make a difference.

Reflecting on Personal Growth

We witnessed profound personal growth in each intern. They faced challenges, learned to adapt, and discovered their strengths. Many shared how their experience reshaped their views on sustainability and community involvement. Remember, today’s interns are tomorrow’s changemakers. We are dedicated to nurturing their growth and supporting their dreams, as they represent the future of sustainability and community engagement.
